40th anniversary of opening of Railway occurred Dec 1 1949; railway from Bergen to Voss was opened in 1883, but it was not until 1894 that remainder of route was authorized; heavy snowfalls cause difficulties of keeping line open for traffic; for many miles line is protected by snow sheds or screened by snow fences, and rotary snow plows are used to clear most exposed sections; construction of railway and protective works are described.
