Electric power has been adopted to greater or lesser extent by railroads in 29 different countries; about 10,000 mi. of line are electrified out of total of 600,000 mi. in these countries; electrified mileage thus constitutes about 1.67 per cent of total route-mile in countries involved; electrification where adopted has been due to special conditions or national policy; tendency toward closer relationship of railways and power companies.
