Prior to 1907, Atlantic liners were driven by reciprocating engines and stoked coal-burning furnaces; Mauretania in 1907, was first turbine direct-driven ship, followed by others of similar design; U. S. Navy experimented with electric drive in 1913, on collier Jupiter; recently electric propulsion has been applied to Lexington producing 210,000 hp.; no one knows what limitations are.
