Alternative arrangements for cargo pumping in large diesel tankers are discussed; two kinds of main-propulsion power plants considered are single, direct-coupled, large-bore, two cycle diesel, and geared installation comprising four turbocharged two stroke engines; steam-driven, diesel-driven, gas-turbine-driven, electrically driven, and main-engine-driven pumping systems are evaluated as to weight, first cost, and yearly operating costs.
