Relative importance of short-haul transportation in Canada in recent years is illustrated by fact that roughly 70% of intercity tonnage of freight and 88% of intercity passenger trips can be classed as short haul; analysis of trends and expected future developments in transportation suggests that short-haul freight and passenger traffic may be expected to continue to increase rapidly in future years; however, decline in short-haul percentage of total air passenger traffic, and slight increase in short-haul percentage of total rail passenger traffic is seen; tables.
