Various phases of laboratory evaluation are described; characteristics measured are adhesions of component parts, hardness checks, tensile and elongation values, and hysteresis values of polymers, stress-strain relationship of tensile member, static conductivity, oil resistance, etc; usual criteria in testing V-belts of new design is power transmission; problem of correlating test data to drive requirement is demonstrated in development of blower-generator drive on Corvair automobile; to establish test for quality level assurance, field performances of belt must be evaluated and test must duplicate most destructive features of drive to be sound indicator of quality.
