Latest developments in regenerative braking on single-phase rail traction vehicles in Switzerland; evolution of exciter motor is reviewed leading to development of braking equipment whose weight was reduced from 3.6 to 1.5 kg/kw; braking of total train weight on slopes and decelerating fast trains on plains; for suburb trains with driving axles only, all deceleration is effected by regeneration; 86% of modern a-c locomotives and 59% of motor coaches are equipped with regenerative brakes; in future, power electronics will enable realization of regenerative systems with 0.3 to 0.4 kg/kw.
