Survey data were obtained to estimate octane number requirements of 1966 model United States car population and 12 selected car models of special interest; program included determination of octane number requirements over operating speed range and observations of part throttle knock, surface ignition, and rumble; test cars were sampled randomly from cars having minimum of 3000 mi; knocking tendency with tank fuel was first observed; then octane number requirements were determined using three fuel series -- primary reference fuels, full-boiling range fuels blended to represent average commercial gasolines, and low sensitivity full-boiling range fuels having octane numbers lower than average commercial gasolines.
