Main points to be borne in mind are: hump must be high enough to ensure that worst-running cars, under most adverse conditions, will run full distance required; gradients of hump must be such that cars separate quickly on leaving summit; track circuit over switches should be as short as consistent with safety; automatic point setting recommended.
