Use of machine welding to prefabricate rail for Rimutaka Tunnel and approaches; rail on each side of weld is held between two elements carrying high amperage and low voltage and heated; two photoelectric cells measure heat by color of metal; 351-ft lengths of tunnel track were lifted from flat cars by series of transverse gantries spanning width of tunnel and running on rail 8 ft 10 in. apart; welded approach rails are 117 ft or 126 ft in length.
