Operation of Pennsylvania Railroad's retarder classification yard that was converted from two rider hump yards; new 42-track yard has two master and six group retarders equipped with speed sensing units; yard handles 1200 to 1400 cars every 24 hr and has automatic route switching for prompt handling of cars into various class tracks; time saving procedure in yard is that departing eastbound train can be made up while westbound cars are pushed over hump for classification.
