Consideration is given to establishing various designs of main propulsion steam turbine plants, both present and future, in their proper perspective; on basis that minimum ship's fuel rate is but one of many variables constituting ship's cost, it is pointed out that progressive development of reliable and simplified cross-compound single-casing gear plant together with aggressive development of equally reliable single-casing lock-train gear plant may be way of future.
