Ships considered are British Railways Board's Southern Region fleet, comprising passenger, train and car ferries, all of which operate to timetable and with exception of car ferries, form link in British and Continental Railway services; hull lengths are from 311 to 373 ft, speed 16 to 22 1/2 knots, displacements 2260 to 4130 tons, mean draft 11 ft 2 in. to 13 ft 6 in., with provision for 700 to 1500 passengers.
