In author's experience over number of years with stabilized ships it was obvious that in addition to rolling motion of vessel, translational movement, usually called sway, has been apparent; records were made in cross channel steamer, and medium and large liner, of both roll and sway motions; stabilization to apparent vertical is discussed in relation to sway measurements and shown to be impractical; maximum movements in sway direction are determined, and it is suggested this might be followed up in assessing bending stresses in horizontal plane to which vessel is subject.
