Development work carried out by Vosper Ltd, Portsmouth, England, resulting in installation of new type of steering system in their high speed naval craft; roll damping system made use of double acting hydraulic rams supplied by hydraulic system incorporating constant delivery pump under control of servo spool valve; Vosper steering system can be tailored to suit vessels requiring rudder torques in range 20 to 300 ton ft corresponding, according to speed, to ships of up to 25,000 tons displacement; for torques up to 100 ton ft hydraulic pressures of under 1500 psi are used; for higher torques pressures can be increased to 3000 psi thus avoiding need for inconveniently large rams.
