Thermit process for welding rails adopted in relaying 100and 110-lb rails on Melbourne suburban electrified lines; advantages of long welded rails are: saving in maintenance costs due to fewer joints and re-use of old rails, saving in maintenance of rolling stock, better conductivity and reduction in current used and more comfortable travelling.
