Joint investigation conducted by London Transport Board and Meteorological Office to provide information on relationship between weather and rail temperature; equipment installed at selected recording sites comprised remote-reading mercury-in-steel thermographs by means of which continuous records were taken of air temperatures at 4 ft above ground and at rail level, temperature of length of rail mounted at track level, and temperature of thermometer exposed on ballast.
