Despite unusual technical difficulties encountered during expansion of West German section between Thionville and Coblenz, navigable section 271 km long was completed within seven years and was officially inaugurated in May 1964; principles of overall development project are described and essential data are given; project included construction of 14 dams with total fall of 89.9 m, five outer basins, and 40 m wide ship channel.
