Sperry detector car, automotive unit designed to detect internal defects in rails; large \ill\w-voltage current generated in car which moves over track at 7 mi per hr; brushes of detecting unit making contact with rails thereby energizing section between brushes; defects cause variation in magnetic field set up in rail, which is amplified and recorded on sensitive instruments in car.
