Account of disaster which occurred to HMS Captain in 1870; warship had length of 320 ft, breadth 53 1/4 ft and draft 25 ft; driven by engines of 900 hp and fitted to carry 26,300 sq ft of sail; ship not only lacked true characteristic of turret ship, but also prime characteristic of monitor, fact that Captain floated 2 ft deeper than was first intended was fully known long before she sailed on her last voyage.
