312 emergency ships christened "Ugly Ducklings," renamed by Maritime Commission; problems overcome in planning Liberty fleet; ships are single screw cargo vessels, each powered with one 3-cyl, direct acting, surface condensing triple expansion marine engine of 2500 ihp at 76 rpm; steam applied by two water tube boilers at 220 lb per sq in. gage pressure and 450 F total temperature at superheat outlet; discussion of specifications and equipment of ships.
