In five former Liberty ships, steam engines have been replaced by 6-cyl Fiat single acting 2-stroke engines; as result of conversion fuel consumption reduced, speed raised to 13 knots and power from 2250 bhp to 3600 bhp; ships, capable of another 15 or 20 yr, show no optimum characteristics.
