Paper shows that improvements in reliability and economics through improved maintainability are in sight for next generation of airline aircraft; major aspects of optimum maintainability are considered; two means for automatic fault isolation appear possible; one is use of airplane-wide system generally called "AIDS" (Aircraft Integrated Data System); other is known as "BITE" (Built-In test Equipment); problems of different sensors, programming, ground analysis equipment, etc., if AIDS systems are not standardized, are also discussed.
