Illustrated description of 5-cyl, 4500-bhp engine installed in two " Empire" class tankers; it is of North-Eastern-Richardsons, Westgarth two-stroke design developed from single-cylinder, double-acting engines built by Company in 1925; historical development; very few fundamental departures have been made from original design; entirely new design of piston and vertical scavenge pumps of more orthodox design have now been adopted.
