Merits of various pilot postures are examined; it is shown that main advantage of prone position is that pilot can be accommodated in fuselage of much smaller diameter than would otherwise be possible; examples of aircraft incorporating prone design; it appears that fighters and ground attack aircraft are main candidates, but advanced development of g suit, difficulties in accommodating pilot and need to train him for new type of flying, make it unlikely that prone position will be widely used.
