System for pneumatic control of their marine propulsion engines was developed by MAN in conjunction with Westinghouse-Bremsen GmbH, and demonstrated on 5-cyl MAN KZ70/120D unit developing 5500 bhp at 135 rpm; use of air as operating medium permits integration of pneumatic reversing gear and starting system on engine and dispensing with positioner; changeover cock required for reversing is built into control function of handwheel, which is turned clockwise for ahead and anti-clockwise for astern operation; duties of entire automated remote control system are explained; diagram shows control system arrangement.
