Design procedure described involves determination of need, and selection of appropriate system; specific warrants for installation are determined from roadway properties and location and type of roadside obstacles; guard rail and medium barrier designs evaluated by full-scale crash tests and satisfactory service performance are presented, together with selection procedure; aspects relating to maintenance and upgrading of existing guard rail systems are discussed; recommended designs and details presented include guardrail designs for bridge approaches.
