Alaskan Mail and Indian Mail are first two ships of five to be built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co, and are based on designs prepared by J.J. Henry Co Inc; they each have seven holds arranged, four forward and three aft of deckhouse and compact engineroom, etc; length oa 605 ft, beam molded 82 ft, depth molded 46 ft, design draft 35 ft 1/2 in., bale (dry) capacity 1,054,867 cu ft and refrigerated 21,893 cu ft, dw 22,208 tons; steam is produced at 850 psi, 930 F, and is supplied to General Electric MST-13 propulsion turbine set developing 21,600 shp at 102 rpm (propeller speed) and 24,000 shp at 105 rpm.
