Increased use of submersibles creates training need similar to that of training airplane pilots; efforts made by Naval Training Device Center toward development of Underwater Terrain Navigation and Reconnaissance Simulator; device will have performance characteristics of Alvin-type vehicle; it will be in simulated ocean environment and will consist of cab which moves with 6° of freedom over tank of water containing topographic models; optical system is used to scale view realistically as seen through underwater TV and optical port; navigation is accomplished using sonar guidance systems, visual observation, depth gages, and gyrocompass; vehicle, while navigating, will be subject to environmental effects, such as ocean currents and wave motion.
