Some 65,650 tons of crude oil has been transferred between two Shell tankers while at sea; operation, which involved 70,000-ton dw Drupa and 207,000-ton dw Macoma was aimed at lightening latter vessel to enable her to enter Europoort; as more tankers of this tonnage enter service such transfers will occur regularly until deepening operations at certain European oil terminals are completed; article discusses philosophy on which scheme is based and some of technical problems which were (and are) requiring solution.
