Rocket Assisted Projectile (RAP) consists of usual explosive charge and fuse, but has small, solid-fueled rocket motor added at back end; motor cuts in as projectile reaches apex of its gun-powder induced trajectory; RAP increases range of artillery by at least 25%; new round will be used in guns such as Army's 105-mm howitzer; Navy has developed RAPs for its 5-in. guns; RAP leads to new generation of light-weight artillery; main development problem for RAP was timing ignition of rocket motor to produce smooth trajectory; high angle of incidence makes RAP more lethal against "soft" targets than conventional rounds.
