Discussion of possibilities of designing exempted spaces into tankers, taking into account disadvantages and how they can be offset; point arises from measurement of freeboard for tonnage mark from second deck at side; as camber is not criterion, it is proposed to adopt reverse round of beam, so exempting maximum voume from inclusion in underdeck tonnage without penalty; if future tankers are fitted with double bottoms, this further reduces tonnage, but is primarily advantageous from other aspects; diagrams and table of dimensions and tonnages compare conventional, Duokleen, tween-deck, and tween-deck double bottom ships.
