Transportation engineering education should cover all modes of transportation (highways, railroads, airways, etc); traditionally, courses in transportation engineering education have been offered in civil engineering, with emphasis on highway engineering during recent years; to cover broad subject area, adequately future curricula should be stratified by function (planning, design, construction, and operation of multimodel system) rather than by mode; new curriculum in changing from 5 to 4 yr undergraduate curriculum, will include three required courses in transportation, structured by function and cutting various transportation modes; development of new curriculum is described.
