Report of British Welding Research Association submitted in Jan 1947 on work undertaken to investigate belief that sudden brittle fractures occurring in American welded ships were due to residual stresses and particularly to reaction stresses; no evidence disclosed that such brittle fractures can occur spontaneously in ductile material under influence of residual stresses alone.
