Project at Eaton Manufacturing Co was aimed at developing retarder unit that would do most of steady-state braking for large on- and off-highway trucks which are primarily 5 axle units with about 75, 000 lb GVW; paper describes Fuller truck retarder, designed as braking device for large on-highway trucks operating in mountainous terrains with steep descent grades; retarder will considerably reduce cost of relining and downtime; up to 5% grades, retarder effects 100% of braking; on steeper grades it contributes major portion.
