Effect of impact on design of fenders and other structures; concepts of impact process required for mathematical treatment are presented; dynamic equations are established for evaluation of fraction of kinetic energy to be absorbed by fender system; evaluation of energy absorbed by heeling ship is dealt with; it is shown that some other ways in which energy can be absorbed during berthing operation are of no consequence in design of fenders and berthing structures; suggestions are made for selection and design of fenders and some new types of fenders are described.
