In secondary radar system pulses transmitted from ground, trigger apparatus in aircraft which sends back coded reply; code may be used for conventional control procedures, or for automatic tracking of aircraft without use of computer; information is given on "Secar " system developed jointly by Marconi Co Ltd and Compagnie Francaise Thomson-Houston; interrogating pulses from ground are sent on 1030 Mc and aircraft transponders reply on 1090 Mc; there are four civil and three military modes, but mode which establishes identity is common to both systems.
