Boilers of New York Central Class J-3 4-6-4 type passenger locomotive and Class L3 4-8-2 type freight locomotive were subjected to stationary tests at Selkirk, NY, engine terminal in 1940 and 1942, respectively; desuperheating method of testing developed on New York Central to permit reproduction of road conditions was used; lower pressure favors L-3; heat distribution; combustion characteristics.
