Standard Oil Co, Ohio, road test program involved 64 fuel combinations following statistical design to study deposit effects on base stocks and additives; laboratory tests to obtain fuel-additive information and to study engine operating variables; results indicate that wild ping is associated with octane number and rumble to surface ignition; fuels can be designed to provide minimum rumble through proper selection and blending.
