Primary factor in selection of configuration of spacecraft is its mission, complexity of which dictates complexity of spacecraft; 3 different types are considered -- compact, exemplified by Vanguard, Explorer, Tiros, and Telstar spacecraft; deployable, exemplified by Surveyor spacecraft; and inflatable spacecraft, Echo I; problem areas, e.g., inflation, light weight structural components, launch environment, and micrometeoroids; life support; power systems; sterilization.
