Emphasis is on thermal shield and its integration with structure as it accounts for important fraction of weight and of problems in vehicle design; in selection of materials and design criteria for unmanned and manned vehicle structures wide spectrum of environmental conditions from initial assembly to final impact must be considered; role that thermal shield plays in determining feasibility of entry vehicles; vehicle kinetic energy, heat shield capability, and vehicle heat load, all expressed in Btu/lb, are shown as function of entry velocity.
