Requirements are established with respect to temperature, surrounding media, and loading; using fundamental mission phases of launch, space travel, re-entry and landing, material requirements are discussed for each phase, with major emphasis on space travel phase; titanium is used extensively throughout spacecraft; end result of requirements is shown by describing Gemini spacecraft structure and material types illustrating trade-offs and design penalties created by material limitations; specific material problems that need solution.
