Total orders increased from 1.65 million gross tons at end of 1962 to 2.2 million gross tons by mid-1964, so that most yards will be fully occupied until end of 1965 and many up to 1966; although prices for new orders secured recently have risen slightly, they still do not cover costs; modernization and enlargement programs have been carried out by various yards; fluctuations in orders, increased costs, government aid, etc., are discussed; tables show motor ships of over 2000 tons completed in yards of German Federal Republic in 1964, and motor ships and steamers in order; notes are included on output of East German shipyards.
