Prototype 48 1/2 ft lifeboat, embodying self-righting principle, was recently completed by Littlehampton yard of William Osborne for Royal Nat Life-Boat Instn; boat, named Earl and Countess Howe, has traditional lifeboat hull with marked sheer and low freeboard amidships; length 48 ft 6 in., beam 14 ft, mean draft 4 ft, displacement 27 tons; casing extends over greater part of length providing shelter and forming watertight citadel; 2 6-cyl Gardner diesel engines, each developing 90 bhp at 1200 rpm are fitted.
