It is suggested that limited scale field tests in large marine diesel engines on board ships are not reliable means of evaluating performance of diesel cylinder lubricant; significant and reproducible wear results can be obtained with carefully controlled laboratory engine tests which can, therefore, be used for evaluation and development of suitable types of special cylinder lubricants.
