It is suggested that limited scale field tests in large marine diesel engines on board ships are not reliable means of evaluating performance of diesel cylinder lubricant; significant and reproducible wear results can be obtained with carefully controlled laboratory engine tests which can, therefore, be used for evaluation and development of suitable types of special cylinder lubricants. From paper before 6th World Petroleum Conference, June 1963. (See also Motor Ship v 44 n 516 July 1963 p 147-60)
