Ships should be designed to meet economic requirements of trade and physical requirements of operation; principal features include first cost, strength, speed, stability, seaworthiness, safety, capacity, easy stowage, satisfactory loading and discharging facilities, and economy of operation; there is need in American merchant marine for modern freight vessels of cargo-liner type, with maintained speed of 15 knots, to supplement present slow ships.
