In extensive tests, new heavy duty locomotive propelled machine, called Ballastmaster, cleaned ballast on both track shoulders simultaneously to depth of 8 in. below ties at max daily rate of 6 mi in 6 hr of on-track time; illustrated description of machine introduced by Railway Ballast Engineers, Inc, Milwaukee, Wis, which is said to be capable of cleaning path of ballast 4 ft wide on both sides of track simultaneously, at speed of 1 mph.
