Primary future requirements for airbreathing propulsion systems are examined to anticipate future developments for following aircraft types -- efficient long-range cargo aircraft, high-performance passenger aircraft, high-performance vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, and hypersonic vehicle; four general areas for development in aircraft propulsion systems will be aimed at improvement of overall efficiency, minimum specific weight, light weight augmentation schemes, in form of lift engines and cruise engine augmentors, and systems having high Mach number capabilities.
