Paper deals with engine and power plant improvements recently achieved or likely to be available in near future contributing to lower operating costs of commercial jet transports; improvements obtained in fuel consumption over 12-yr period are shown in graphical form; trends in basic design conception, including examples of features ensuring low vibration level, low metal temperatures of hot end parts, and use of most advanced design technology and cyclic testing techniques for major rotating and structural parts.
